Overview

Kismet is an anonymous text and peer-to-peer video-chat service. We designed the current experience so you can start a conversation without creating an account or providing your name, email address, or phone number.

Information the service handles

  • Chat preferences: your self-selected gender, preferred partner gender, and any selected interests.
  • Anonymous session data: a generated participant ID, display name, room membership, and temporary connection state.
  • Messages: messages and typing events are transmitted to the person in your active room so the chat can work.
  • Video connection data: when you use video, your browser camera/microphone stream is transmitted through a peer-to-peer WebRTC connection. The service handles temporary participant and PeerJS connection identifiers to establish that connection.
  • Technical data: request and device information that may be processed by hosting, security, and analytics providers when you use the site.

How information is used

We use this information to match compatible participants, deliver chat messages, keep the service reliable, provide peer-to-peer video, limit abuse, understand aggregate site usage, and maintain the service.

The browser stores the anonymous participant ID and selected preferences in local storage so a chat can reconnect after a reload or temporary page close. You can remove this data through your browser's site-storage controls.

Retention

The current chat matching and relay state is held in server memory while needed for an active conversation. It is not a durable message-history feature. Disconnected participants are removed after the service's temporary reconnection window, and messages are not intended to remain available after that lifecycle ends.

Video is not recorded by the current service. Authorized moderation observers may receive a live, muted copy of an eligible video stream for safety review. Observer connections are temporary and are not recorded or persisted by the current implementation.

Analytics and service providers

Kismet uses Vercel Web Analytics to measure page views and improve the site. Hosting, network, and security providers may process technical request data as needed to deliver and protect the service. These providers process information under their own terms and policies.

Your choices and safety

You can stop using the service at any time and clear its local-storage data from your browser. Do not share personal, financial, login, or identifying information in an anonymous conversation. For service questions or privacy requests, use the contact channel published by the service operator.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when the service or its data practices change. The latest version will remain available on this page with its effective date.

By continuing to use Kismet, you acknowledge the Terms of Service and this policy.
